چکیده

responsive to changes in the balance between protein anabolism and catabolism. The activity of this enzyme is low when conservation of protein is required for body growth. Thus, in the livers of immature rats, alanine transaminase is only one-fourth the level of that found in adult rat liver (11). Conversely, alanine transaminase activity in liver may be elevated by as much as sevenfold when gluconeogenesis and catabolism of protein are increased by treatment with glucocorticoids (5, 34) or by withholding food (34). Furthermore, treatment of rats bearing Walker carcinoma 256 with cortisol or by feeding a 75 per cent casein diet will also inhibit the growth of the tumor and enhance the activity of this transaminase in tumor tissue (32). The capacity of the Walker tumor to utilize large amounts of protein at the expense of the host has been studied extensively (13). The results of the experiments described in this paper indicate that, as the amount of protein available to the host becomes limiting during the growth of the tumor, the level of alanine transaminase in liver is reduced and this enzyme becomes less responsive to cortisol.

Corticosteroids and transaminase activity. III. A relationship between changes in alanine transaminase activity and the growth of Walker carcinosarcoma 256.

The effects of treatment with cortisol on the growth and alanine-a-ketoglutarate transaminase 1 activity of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 were studied. Similarly, the effects of other conditions known to enhance gluconeogenic activity, such as diabetes, fasting, and high protein intake, were investigated. Each of these conditions was previously shown to be associated with elevated activity of alani...

Catabolism of xanthine and uracil in tumor-bearing rats.

The urinary excretion of allantoin and uric acid was greatly increased in rats bear ing Walker carcinoma 256. The increase was greater with more advanced tumor growth. A similar increase was also observed in the allantoin concentration of the plasma and liver of these rats. An increase in the RNA and DNA content and a decrease in the RNA/DNA ratio were found in the muscle of the tumor-bearing a...

Glucocorticoids and Transaminase Activity. Vi. Comparison of the Adaptive Increases of Alanine- and Tyrosine-alpha-ketoglutarate Transaminases.

The activity of alanine-cr-ketoglutarate transaminase (n-alanine :2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, EC 2.6.1.2) is increased markedly in the livers of diabetic or fasted rats (1). The induction of this enzyme also occurs when either intact or adrenalectomized rats are fed diets high in protein or given corticosteroid injections (24). The adaptive response of this enzyme in glucocorticoid-sensiti...

Evaluation of the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Berberis vulgaris root on the activity of liver enzymes in male hypercholesterolemic rats

Objectives: Hyperlipidemia can cause a variety of diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and fatty liver which is followed by increased liver enzymes. Since Berberis vulgaris (B. vulgaris) root possesses antioxidant properties, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect ofits extract on the activity of liver enzymes in rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study...
